The Downward Spiral

Tonight had been no different from any of the other nights that I had known since coming to Sunnydale. Okay, sure, it was true, many nights, I didn't go outside. And then there were other nights when I did go outside in which the vampire population didn't seem out of control, but on a lot of nights, I had my stakes on me, and my martial arts skills and was forced to use both.

This night had ben one of the latter nights, except on this night, I had killed two vampires and as I moved closer to my destination, I walked with stealth and secrecy, noticing the gentleman who weren't really gentleman at all, with their robes and strange, almost no eyes. I couldn't believe that they didn't have eyes at all, because if that were the truth, then how could they see where they were going?

I didn't know the answer to that question, but what I could instantly notice was that they seemed to be going to the same place that I was. As I used cars and trees for protection, or should I say, cover, I realized that the two that I had locked on to, were doing much of the same thing, like they were planning a surprise attack.

I was going to see Buffy. I hadn't told her that I knew what she was, but I did. She was like my mother, and reminded me of her in so many ways. Buffy was in one word, incredible. Seeing her the way that she was in school...others in my position, a position of power over her there might have regarded her with suspicion, but not me. I knew that what she did, she did out of protection...she did for the betterment of Sunnydale. It was why I wanted her in the school and it was time to come clean. Except now, it looked as though she was in danger.

I walked towards the door, noticing that Buffy didn't seem to be inside, but that at least one girl was in there. It wasn't her sister and I wanted to find out what was really going on. I checked behind me to see if the no-eye guys were there, and before knocking, composed myself, figuring out exactly how to tell Buffy who I was. I had my bag in hand, and was ready.

I looked back one more time and then knocked. I had to tell Buffy my secret. There was a vampire out there that had killed my mother, and if anyone could help me with the death of a vampire slayer in the past, it was the current, big-hearted slayer.

I heard someone from inside asking who it was.

"I'm Robin Wood. I'm the principal of the high school. I work with Buffy. Is she here?"

The voice wasn't Buffy, or Dawn's, but it was obvious that whoever it was didn't want to answer the door out of fear of something. If the vampire slayer was here, if Buffy was here, then there wouldn't be the fear of opening a door going on.

Still, I waited for the door to be opened.

I liked this new development. Well, it wasn't really new, but still, I liked it. The poor little lost boy, who had become a man was now steppin' up his initiative and movin' closer to the slayers.

To make myself know, or not to make my presence known, that was the question. I was always there, but this seemed like an especially good time to make myself known. The leaders of the house weren't home, and there was truly no power here at all.

It was too bad that Spike had let me down again, but not all fear had to be derived from actual violence.

"Buffy's busy. She's, um, showering. Come back later. Like, tomorrow or the day after."

A scared little girl. She wouldn't even let an ally into her house. Too bad that she couldn't prevent me from enterin'.

"Oh come on, Kennedy. You can let him in. He's not goin' to be able to stop me, anyway, and he's on your side. Besides, he resembles me so much..."

I laughed as Kennedy, a potential slayer, one of the ones, probably the one I wanted dead the most out of the runt line...looked at me with fear and shock. I laughed again, louder this time.

"Buffy's busy. She's, um, showering. Come back later. Like, tomorrow or the day after."

I turned around to look and see if some of the more undead citizens of Sunnydale had followed me, and didn't see anyone, which was a good thing.

Buffy was showering, if I had heard her correctly, and I was supposed to...because of that, return in a day or two?

There had always been an odd air around Buffy when she was at the school, because she was trying to cover information from me that I already knew, but this seemed different. I got the impression that Buffy wasn't here.

I was about to say okay, and that I would see her again soon, and tell her what I knew, because it was about time to do that, when I heard the laughter coming from inside. It was funny, haha laughter. It was a taunting laughter and I didn't like it.

"What the hell is that? I'm on Buffy's side. I'm on your side. Let me in!"

I had the feeling that it was time for me to fight. Again. Only this time, there would be a witness. It was just too bad that Buffy wouldn't be the one to see it.

"You don't scare me. Hell, you can't even touch me. Go find some one else to haunt Casper."

Robin Wood, son of a slayer beautifully slain by my little puppet, Spike, wanted in. That was good. I could create a nice bit of tension between Robin and Spike when I told him who killed his motha.

"Haha. Very drole. Casper. Such a bad ghost. What kind of ghost would be friendly. A weak ione, Kennedy. Like you, weak. Sure, I can't touch you. You know the rules. It's very brilliant how you've been listening to Buffy and the otha fools around here, but since you would rather not talk to me about your fears and how impotent that you actually are, and since you're great blonde protecta isn't here right now, maybe it's time for me to go bring anotha of my powerful friends to the table?"

I started towards the window as if I would walk out of it, but of course, I was only tauntin' right now. I didn't have another vampire of pure evil ready just yet. I would have to work on that.

She wouldn't open the door, but I could hear somebody else talking to her and she mentioned something about Casper and not being afraid. I didn't know what any of that meant.

I knew that the hellmouth was under my school. I knew that Buffy was the vampire slayer, that Dawn was her sister and that the evil was heating up around here, but what was in the house?

I couldn't waste time worrying about whether or not Buffy liked the intrusion that I was about to perform. She would find out my story when she saw me, and would now if she was in there, but I got the distinct feeling that she wasn't in there and it wasn't Dawn's voice, either. I didn't know who this girl was, but I knew that she was in Buffy's home, and that something else was in there.

I kicked the door open and saw an attractive brunette and a black man, with a smile on his face.

I started towards him and swung, except that I went right through him, and turned, almost separating my shoulder, pulling my shoulder back into place and looking through the ghost to see the girl.

"What the hell is going on here? Where's Buffy?"

"What the hell is going on here? Where's Buffy?"

"Robin Wood, in the flesh. Brought into this life by his selfish mother now deceased. I should think, Robin, that you would want to stay as far as this as you could, bein' that your family history is not exactly sterlin' in this area."

I would eat him up and make his death painful, just as Spike, the current disappointment had made his mothea's death painful.

"Buffy is the slayer, but she is not my protector. I can hold my own."

I laughed.

"You can hold your own, can you, Kennedy? You think that you are a slaya and I dare say that in mere seconds, the mortal man with no superpowers that just came into the room would wipe the floor with you."

God, I loved this. I hoped, truly, that I spurred on a fight between the two of them. It would make me laugh and probably vibrate in my non-corporeal way.

My cool demeanor, usually held, was fading away with rapidity.

"Buffy is the slayer, but she is not my protector. I can hold my own."

The ghostly son a bitch laughed. I wished that he wasn't ghostly.

"She isn't here. Don't bother trying to fight it. He's all talk and no action."

I wanted to ask what he was, but he was gone, at least from our view, just like that, but not before letting out another barb.

"You can hold your own, can you, Kennedy? You think that you are a slaya and I dare say that in mere seconds, the mortal man with no superpowers that just came into the room would wipe the floor with you."

I wasn't entertaining that notion, remotely.

"What was that, and how are you connected to Buffy, Kennedy, is it?"

I calmed down. There was no point in getting worked up unless you were actually going to fight.

"Weren't you listening? I'm a slayer, or at least training to be."

Still trying to shake off rage from that ghosts words, I composed myself. In order to answer that question, I would be giving away something that I wanted to tell Buffy about directly.

I still wasn't sure if the ghost thing was listening, so before I proceeded, I wanted to make sure that we weren't about to be interrupted again by the ineffectual black-Casper-taunter.

"What did it mean about your family and you wanting to stay away? Come to think of it, why are you even here? Last I knew, high school principles didn't make house calls."

I smiled. "I suppose that you are right. High school principals aren't common for making house calls. You have me there, but I assure you that I am on your side. But first, please tell me what that ghost was. It's not common for ghosts to be seen, even if we both know that the world is not only populated by humans."

She was training to be a slayer. I was raised by a watcher. Slayers were from a line and only became one when the last one, Buffy in this case, was killed. One could train for it, if they knew their calling in advance, I supposed.

I wished now, that I had gone over all of those sort of things with Crowley before he passed away.
